Since entry into force of the Law on Universities of Applied Sciences, Institutions of Higher Education, and Research Institutes of 25 November 1992, Liechtenstein has formally offered an – albeit very limited – tertiary education sector, which currently encompasses three institutions of higher learning and a university-like institute.
On 21 January 2005, the Higher Education Act (HEA) entered into force for the tertiary education sector. This framework law regulates the following areas: responsibilities and status of institutions of higher education, licenses, courses of study, student body, instructors, academic degrees and honorary titles, quality management and supervision, funding, penal provisions, and legal remedies.
