Liechtenstein belongs to the financial supporters of the Interstate University of Applied Sciences of Technology Buchs (NTB), along with the cantons of St. Gallen and Graubünden. NTB's courses of study include the interdisciplinary university of applied sciences program in Systems Engineering, leading to a bachelor's degree. The degree program is structured modularly and is open to either full-time or part-time enrollment. Building on this, a master's program has been offered since 2008. Students are admitted to the Systems Engineering bachelor's program without an examination, if they have completed a vocational high school degree, or if they have completed a baccalaureate followed by a one-year professional internship.
In addition to the bachelor's program in Systems Engineering and the master's programs, NTB also offers part-time, modular post-graduate studies and courses in Automation Systems, Energy Technology Systems, Integrated Microsystems, Medical Technology Systems, and Optical Systems.
The close link to professional practice and the quality of the engineering education at NTB are constantly verified in direct contact with the business world. The various NTB laboratories and the Institutes for Microsystems Technology, Materials Technology, Physical Chemistry, and Measurement, Testing, and Simulation Technology are not only the pillars of a practice-oriented education in current technologies. They also successfully cultivate cooperative technology transfer between NTB and industry within the framework of applied research and development as well as through services.
The Government of the Principality of Liechtenstein as well as the Ministry of Science and Research of Baden-Württemberg already granted NTB recognition as a professional college in 1993 and 1994, respectively. This recognition followed in Switzerland in 1998 in the course of the legislative introduction of professional colleges. Since the autumn of 1993, Students who enter NTB with a vocational high school degree and who successfully complete their three-year degree program are recognized as professional college graduates. The first Swiss professional college diplomas were awarded in 2001.
