Primary school covers five grade levels. It is the beginning of compulsory schooling. It is the common educational setting for all children and can be attended free of cost. Children who have had their sixth birthday by the end of June of the current year are admitted to primary school.
The following subjects are taught in primary school: Mathematics, German, Social Studies, Art, Music, Sports, Textiles and Technical Design, Religion, as well as English starting in third grade (from the 2010/2011 school year, starting in second grade).
The teachers observe, promote, and assess each child and provide regular feedback to the child and the child’s parents. Elements of this comprehensive assessment include the child’s learning, social, and work behavior. The child also learns self-assessment.
In the fifth year, the question arises for teachers and parents which type of secondary school is most appropriate for each child. During this time, contact with parents is particularly important. On the basis of general assessment criteria – there are no numeric grades – the class teacher recommends a particular type of school for the child. The parents indicate their desired school type to the teacher. If parents and the teacher cannot agree, the pupil may take an entrance examination.
At the end of the fifth year, students enter secondary school.
