Realschule (upper school)

The Realschule (in Switzerland: Sekundarschule or secondary school) is a challenging school. The Realschule prepares students for demanding professional apprenticeships or further schooling such as the upper level of the Gymnasium, vocational, business, and diploma high schools, as well as various continuing schools in Austria (commercial academies, Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium, etc.). The Realschule encompasses grades six to nine. The Realschule is the ideal path to a high school education in parallel with one’s professional activity. After each school year, it is possible to transfer to the Gymnasium: after the first, second, and third year, transfer is possible without loss of time; after the fourth year, transfer is possible by repeating a year.

The performance of students is generally assessed with numeric grades. The Realschule is completed with a graduation report card, which also takes into account the grades attained in the graduation examination.
