Since joining the EEA in 1995, Liechtenstein has participated in the following three EU programmes: SOCRATES (for education), LEONARDO (for vocational education and training), and YOUTH (for youth).
Effective 1 January 2007, the integrated Lifelong Learning Programme has replaced the SOCRATES and LEONARDO programmes. There is now only one programme for all forms of education and training (duration from 2007 to 2013). In Liechtenstein, this programme is administered by the newly created Agency for International Educational Affairs.
In a manner appropriate to its size, Liechtenstein participates in the individual action programs of SOCRATES such as Erasmus, Comenius, Grundtvig, Arion, and Eurydice. For those responsible for education in Liechtenstein, this participation creates previously unknown opportunities for European cooperation. The exchange of language assistants, the mobility of university students and instructors, school partnerships founded within the framework of Comenius, as well as European events for the continuing training of educators are now an enduring and essential component of transnational cooperation with EU/EEA States and accession countries.
