Titles, orders, decorations

The Reigning Prince , pursuant to his prerogatives as Head of State, has the authority to bestow titles, orders and decorations.
The titles of nobility have the simple predicate of nobility "von" (of) and the titles of "Baron" and "Count". However, the granting of noble titles is very rare.
To honor a person who has rendered a great service to the Princely House or the country, Princely titles may be bestowed, such as Princely Councillor, Princely Court Councillor, Princely Justice Councillor, Princely Commerce Councillor, Princely Education Councillor, Princely Spiritual Councillor, etc.
Prince Franz I founded an Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein and a Medal of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein on 22 July 1937.

The Order of Merit encompasses the following ranks:

  • Grand Star of the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein
  • Grand Cross with Diamonds of the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein
  • Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein
  • Commander's Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein
  • Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein
  • Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein

The Medal of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein may be bestowed as:

  • The Golden Medal of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein
  • The Silver Medal of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein

Recipients of the Grand Star, the Grand Cross with Diamonds, or the Grand Cross have the right to designate themselves as "holders" of the Order of Merit, the recipient of the Commander's Cross with Star as "Commander of the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein with Star", the recipient of the Commander's Cross as "Commander", the recipient of the Knight's Cross as "Knight of the Order of Merit of the Principality of Liechtenstein".
Other privileges are not associated with these honors. The decorations remain in the possession of the person on whom they were bestowed and of the person's heirs.
