Hereditary Prince Alois

Hereditary Prince Alois, born in Zurich on 11 June 1968, is the eldest son of Prince Hans-Adam II and Princess Marie of Liechtenstein. He was christened Alois Philipp Maria after his great-grandfather Prince Alois of Liechtenstein, father of the then reigning Prince Franz Josef II.

Hereditary Prince Alois spent his childhood at Vaduz Castle with his parents, brothers and sister and grandparents. Like his father before him, he attended the primary school in Vaduz-Ebenholz and progressed in 1979 to Liechtenstein Grammar School, leaving in spring 1987 with the advanced-level diploma (type B, literature and history option). Afterwards he joined the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst (Gt. Britain), completing his officer training there.

After being commissioned Second Lieutenant, he served for six months with the Coldstream Guards in Hong Kong and London. In October 1988 Hereditary Prince Alois enrolled as a law student at Salzburg University.

He completed his studies in spring 1993, gaining a Master’s degree. From September 1993 to May 1996 he worked for an auditing firm in London. Since then, he has returned to live in Vaduz and is responsible for various sections of the assets of the Princely House. As the reigning prince's eldest son, Prince Alois is destined under the House Statutes to succeed to the throne.

On 15 August 2004 under Art. 13bis of the Constitution of the Principality of Liechtenstein Prince Hans-Adam II appointed Hereditary Prince Alois his permanent representative for exercising the sovereign powers due to him, in preparation for his succession to the throne. Since 15 August 2004 the Hereditary Prince has thus been performing both nationally and internationally the duties of Head of State of the Principality of Liechtenstein.

On 3 July 1993 Hereditary Prince Alois married Duchess Sophie in Bavaria. They have four children: Prince Joseph Wenzel, born 24 May 1995; Princess Marie Caroline, born 17 October 1996; Prince Georg, born 20th April 1999; and Prince Nikolaus, born 6 December 2000.
