The beauty of orchids
Any description of Liechtenstein flora would be incomplete without a mention of the abundance of orchids in Liechtenstein. 48 orchid species grow in the small area of the country, including the rare ghost orchid (epipogium aphyllum) and the delicate one-leaved bog orchid (malaxis monophyllos). Of particular appeal to the hiker are most likely the already mentioned lady's slipper (cypripedium calceolus), the white helleborine (cephalanthera damasonium), the sword-leaved helleborine (c. longifolia), and the red helleborine (c. rubia). The cold-resistant Alpine orchid (chamorchis alpina) rounds off the collection of colorful orchids thriving in so many different habitats.
