Small country - great variety Some people may
ask: what's so special about the fauna in a country with an area of only 160 square kilometers? In fact,
what's fascinating is not so much any unusual individual species, but rather that such a small area
is home to such a rich diversity of animals. Who would have thought that there are 55 mammal species
in Liechtenstein (there are 83 in Switzerland), including 17 species of bats (26 in Switzerland), as
well as 140 species of breeding birds (205), 7 species of reptiles (16), 10 species of amphibians (20),
and 24 species of fish (67). There is also great diversity among invertebrates. For example, Liechtenstein
has been shown to have 120 butterfly (206), 342 bug, 76 longhorn beetle, 72 neuropteron (116), 194 hoverfly
(406), and 65 gall midge (93) species. |
