Engaging in elite sports means to compete at the level of the best
in the world, which is hardly or no longer possible in the framework of amateur sports. Liechtenstein
is a small country, so the potential for elite athletes is already limited due to the size of the population.
Although the broader interests in the area of sports (popular sports) are clearly the focus of State
activity, it should be pointed out that successful elite athletes are "ambassadors" and "advertisements"
for the country they are from or for which they compete. Elite athletes in particular, but also everyone
else engaged in sports, contribute to the national community of Liechtenstein and to the image of Liechtenstein
abroad. In addition, elite athletes are idols and therefore can function as role models, which can be
particularly motivating for young people. Especially through participation in world championships and
Olympic Games, Liechtenstein has again and again enjoyed positive headlines. The great successes of
Liechtenstein skiers are a clear example. For these
reasons, the State must participate in the targeted promotion of elite sports. On the one hand, the
State can provide an optimal infrastructure, to the extent conditions allow. Liechtenstein certainly
has a very good infrastructure, especially with respect to the new sports facilities in Schaan (track
and field) and Vaduz (soccer). On the other hand, the financial element plays an important role, since
elite sports are now only feasible in the form of professional sports. This requires a high demand on
financial resources, which athletes cannot supply of their own accord, at least unless their successes
propel them to the top income level. It is primarily the responsibility of the individual sports associations
to provide the necessary conditions. Private sponsoring has also become an indispensable part of professional
sports. The State promotes elite and competitive sports in the form of one-time or annual financial
contributions or other support measures. |
