Racism is a phenomenon that fundamentally contradicts the concept of universal human rights and the idea of human dignity enshrined therein, which should appertain to every human being in the same way. Xenophobia and racist behaviour are observed everywhere in the world and again and again lead to discrimination and acts of violence.
Since the end of the Cold War, new political and economic fields of tension have developed, precipitating a process of identity formation among various social groups and thereby amplifying tendencies of differentiation between ethnic groups. These tendencies have led to ethnic discrimination and, also in Europe, to the eruption of ethnic-national conflicts with far-reaching effects – also on Liechtenstein: Hundreds of refugees have found protection in Liechtenstein against armed consequences on the territory of former Yugoslavia and against the consequences of these conflicts.
In many countries, there is a general fear of the other and a tendency to reject everything foreign. Triggered by insignificant incidents, this basic attitude can suddenly turn into xenophobia and racism and can at times manifest itself in massive violence against immigrants, against established ethnic and religious minorities, and sometimes also against refugees. Awareness raising and effective strategies against racism are therefore central to preventing violence and both internal and transnational conflict.
