The Liechtenstein Mission in Brussels was established in 1994 to strengthen relations with the European Union. It serves both as Mission to the European Union and also as bilateral Embassy to the Kingdom of Belgium. In addition, the Mission administers the responsibilities of the non-resident Ambassador to the Holy See.

Due to Liechtenstein’s membership in the European Economic Area (EEA) and its other forms of cooperation with the EU, the activities of the Mission in Brussels focus primarily on the EU. The Ambassador and the staff of the Mission represent Liechtenstein in various EEA/EFTA bodies (namely the EEA Joint Committee, the Standing Committee, the ESA/Court Committee, the EEA Financial Instrument Committee, the Subcommittees (together with experts from the EEA Coordination Unit) and, if necessary, the Consultative Committee of the Social Partners and the Joint Parliamentary Committee).

Depending on its Government mandate, the Mission conducts negotiations on current issues within and outside the framework of the EEA. Currently, questions pertaining to the enlargement of the EEA (Romania and Bulgaria) are a focus of the Mission’s work. In addition to formal negotiations, the Mission also conducts a number of individual negotiations, in particular in the context of the incorporation of new EEA law.

As a bilateral embassy, the Embassy represents the interests of Liechtenstein in Belgium. This also includes consular affairs (issuing of passports and identification cards for Liechtenstein citizens as well as administering matters pertaining to civil rights and status).

Currently, four diplomats and two secretaries work at the Liechtenstein Mission in Brussels. Currently Georges Baur is the Chargé d'Affaires a.i.
