On 18 September 1990, the Principality of Liechtenstein joined the United Nations as its 160th member. Since then, the delegation of Liechtenstein has actively participated in the work of the Organization and made valuable contributions, despite the small size of the team.

During the first twelve years, the Mission was headed by Ambassador Claudia Fritsche, currently the Liechtenstein Ambassador in Washington.  Since October 2002, the Mission is led by Ambassador Christian Wenaweser.
