The Principality of Liechtenstein and the Republic of Austria have a historically close and excellent relationship. The close links to its neighbors Austria and Switzerland are of great importance to Liechtenstein and represent a focus of Liechtenstein foreign policy.

The cooperation between the two countries is friendly and takes place at the regional, bilateral, and multilateral levels. Visits at the highest political levels take place regularly between the countries. The close cooperation exists in almost all aspects of public life, especially culture, education, social services, security issues, and justice.

Austria and Liechtenstein are closely linked through a number of international treaties. The most comprehensive is the European Economic Area Agreement (EEA Agreement) , which Liechtenstein joined in 1995. The participation of Austria and Liechtenstein in the EEA has greatly strengthened economic exchange between the two countries. Liechtenstein is a workplace for many Austrians. Almost 7,000 people commute from Austria every day to work in Liechtenstein.

The Principality of Liechtenstein opened a resident embassy in Vienna in 1998.

In addition to conducting bilateral relations between Liechtenstein and Austria, the Embassy of Vienna is responsible for consular services for Liechtenstein citizens in Austria.
