Ministry of Social Affairs

The network of the Liechtenstein social and health system is dense. Numerous public and private facilities are available to provide necessary assistance for medical and social problems. The Government supports a need-oriented and goal-oriented approach to the further development of the Liechtenstein social system. Social policy especially recognizes the work of volunteers.

The Liechtenstein system of social security (social insurance) encompasses two types of benefits. On the one hand, benefits that are in general funded by contributions of the insured individuals and/or their employers, such as financial and material benefits in case of illness and maternity, benefits in case of work-related accidents and illness; on the other hand, benefits funded by the State through general tax revenues, such as supplementary benefits to age and disability insurance, aid to seriously disabled persons, etc.

Liechtenstein health insurance provides protection in case of illness and maternity. It grants material benefits, daily allowances for illness, and maternity benefits. Four health insurance companies are currently licensed by the Government to fulfill the legal health insurance mandate in Liechtenstein.

According to the Ordinance on the Distribution of Responsibilities and the Portfolio Schedule of the Government, Liechtenstein Law Gazette 2005 No. 79, the Ministry of Social Affairs fulfills responsibilities in the following areas:

  • General social policy
    Focus areas:
    - Old age policy
