Within the space of just a few hours, hikers walking from Eschnerberg via Maurerberg to the dolomite towers of the Three Sisters will pass through areas of ocean sediment from Ancient Europe and Ancient Africa.
These sediments were created 100 to 250 million years ago in the Tethys Ocean. As the continents drifted and the tectonic plates pushed together to form the Alps, the different sediments were trapped in the rocks that today make up Liechtensteins mountains. This geological diversity is matched by the diversity of flora and fauna found in the country. The Historic Eschnerberg Trail gives walkers the chance to embark on a journey back in time through this fascinating landscape.
