From 7 May 2016, the Heidibus will connect Maienfeld and Balzers, as the first direct bus route between Graubünden and Liechtenstein comes into service.
Up to now, the Heidibus had only been a shuttle service between the railway station in Maienfeld and the Heididorf village. However, a press release has informed that the bus route will be extended all the way to Balzers via the St. Luzisteig mountain pass from Saturday 7 May 2016. Passengers can therefore for the first time enjoy the benefit of a direct bus journey between Graubünden and Liechtenstein. This service will be running at weekends and national holidays until 23 October 2016.
When in operation, the Heidibus will make three return trips from Balzers to the Maienfeld railway station via St. Luzisteig each day. The shuttle bus will also continue to run between Maienfeld railway station and the Heididorf village as before. This transport route has been put in place by the Town of Maienfeld, Heididorf AG, the Canton of Graubünden's Department for Energy and Transport (Amt für Energie und Verkehr; AEV) and PostAuto.
Previously, the 8 kilometre trip between Balzers and the railway station in Maienfeld involved either a 46-minute journey via Sargans if opting for public transport, a 40-minute hike up a steep path or, most conveniently, driving by car. The new route means that the journey will take just 12 minutes by public transport. GA travel cards and half-fare travel cards are both valid on the Heidibus or passengers can buy connecting tickets. From Balzers, PostAuto also operates a bus network with excellent connections all the way to Feldkirch, on the authority of LIECHTENSTEINmobil.
