The LGT Group is to donate CHF 100,000 each year to aid projects run by Drink & Donate. Its support will help grant people in developing countries access to clean drinking water.
The LGT announced its commitment on World Water Day, writes an article in newspaper "Liechtensteiner Vaterland". While people in Liechtenstein and Switzerland have access to enough drinking water, around 800 million elsewhere do not, according to the article. It explains that 1.5 million people die each year from diseases linked to a lack of water or contaminated water. Charitable organisation Drink & Donate, which is headquartered in Zurich, works to improve the situation. Working to the motto "Drink tap water. Donate drinking water", it asks people to drink tap water instead of bottled water, and donate money saved on buying branded water to drinking water projects in developing countries.
With its annual donation of CHF 100,000 to Drink & Donate, the LGT will facilitate access to clean water to around 15,000 people each year, according to media reports. As a result, the burden on the environment will also be reduced. Ursula Finsterwald, Group Sustainability Manager at LGT, explained: "Producing and transporting mineral water requires a thousand times more energy than tap water. Therefore, enjoying tap water results in lower C02 emissions."
