The Waterfootprint was launched on World Water Day. In Liechtenstein, the motto was ‘drink tap water, donate drinking water’. The campaign initiated by Drink&Donate, LIFE Climate Foundation Liechtenstein and myblueplanet aims to grant people elsewhere access to clean drinking water.
“The aim of Waterfootprint Liechtenstein is to provide one vulnerable person per Liechtenstein citizen access to clean drinking water: in other words, to significantly improve the living conditions of more than 37,000 people in need,” explained the LIFE Climate Foundation in a statement.
“Our launch of a nationwide Waterfootprint is a global premiere,” commented prime minister and LIFE Foundation president Adrian Hasler in the statement. “Liechtenstein has adopted a pioneering role and is actively and energetically working towards ecological and social goals.”
During the evening event on World Water Day, which was the highlight of the campaign’s action day, Hasler revealed that the entire government of Liechtenstein was replacing commercial mineral water with tap water.
According to the event organisers, many companies in Liechtenstein have already got involved with the campaign. The LGT, LLB, Ivoclar Vivadent, Labor Risch, Allied Finance and MBPI are foregoing mineral water and donating the savings to drinking water projects.
“Our involvement is part of our corporate culture, which is characterised by sustainably oriented thinking and trading,” explained Klemens Handler of the LGT during the evening event. Daniel Lüscher, president of myblueplanet, added that renouncing mineral water – the production and distribution of which results in CO2 emissions – would also help protect the climate.
