Hilcona bees enjoy successful first year

18 December 2020

The Demeter beehives housed at Hilcona in Schaan at the start of this year have developed magnificently, the company has said. Project Bee Hilcona was the Liechtenstein-based food group’s way of attempting to contribute to biodiversity and combat insect deaths.

The bees at Hilcona have developed superbly, the food company writes in a press release. The overall result is very positive. Demeter beekeeper Marco Jehle-Radkohl has been able to successfully winterize 20,000 bees, describing the location as “seemingly perfect” in the press release.  Overall, 2020 has been a mixed year with many ups and downs for the bee expert. After an “almost perfect spring” there was “a total setback” for the bees due to the heavy rains that fell during both June and July. However, the bee colonies recovered thanks to improved weather in August. By establishing bee colonies, Hilcona AG’s aim was to contribute to increased biodiversity and combat insect deaths. Their pollination services also support local agriculture. According to beekeeper Jehle-Radkohl, the signs for a successful restart in spring augur well with both colonies displaying a proper instinct for cleaning and humming loudly during the winter inspection.
