Research project with Hilti wins innovation award

A research group from the University of Liechtenstein has developed a novel approach to process management at the construction machinery manufacturer Hilti. The researchers were recently awarded an innovation prize in Italy for their work.
The University of Liechtenstein has been working closely with the Schaan-based company Hilti. The group has its own chair for Business Process Management (BPM) at the university. Within the framework of this partnership, a research group is presently working on the development of an innovative approach to process management at Hilti.
The aim of the project is to replace the process management system currently in use at Hilti. According to a press release issued by the university, processes in the group are to be “modeled, visualized and described” moving forward. In addition, awareness should be created for the special features and properties of the various processes. On this basis, the research group and Hilti developed the BPM Context Framework. This allows Hilti processes to be broken down and classified according to the dimensions of variability and frequency. From this, four process clusters can be derived that each contain processes with comparable characteristics
The BPM Context Framework and findings generated by the project so far were submitted as part of a scientific article to the Industrial Forum of the 19th International Conference for Business Process Management, which was held in Rome. At the conference, the project was selected as the winner of the BPM 2021 Case Innovation Award.
“We are delighted to have received the BPM 2021 Case Innovation Award for our work in the field of context awareness in BPM together with Hilti”, comments Jan vom Brocke, Head of the Institute of Information Systems at the University of Liechtenstein and Hilti Chair of Business Process Management, in the press release. “Above all, I would like to thank Hilti and especially the CIO Dr. Martin Petry and the Global IT department for their openness and continuous support in working with us”, he adds.
